The Opiate of the Masses

Why should there be a factory making powerful pain-killing drugs inside our heads? Since the discovery in 1975 that natural counterparts to morphine and other opiate drugs exist in the brain there has been much speculation about their role in the body. It has been suggested that they may be involved in the suppression of pain, the control of emotion and even the regulation of body fat. Geoff Watts examines these and other theories that try to explain our natural opium dens.

Blueprints of Disease

Every feature of the human body is governed by the genes passed from parent to child. To fashion an entire individual takes millions of them. But sometimes, just one faulty gene can cause a severe disease such as haemophilia or cystic fibrosis. Up to now, all that could be offered was relief of symptoms. Now scientists can identify the roots of some of these disorders: the faults in the genes themselves. Colin Tudge examines this recent medical advance which has opened up new possibilities for treatment and early prenatal diagnosis.
